How to Prepare for Your SkinPen Microneedling Treatment

Knowing how to properly prepare your skin for a cosmetic dermatology treatment is the first step to ensuring optimal results. Whether you want to minimize recovery time or maximize results, it is critical to prepare to the best of your ability before your SkinPen microneedling treatment. Pre-care is essential in achieving optimal results with SkinPen for wrinkles.

What to Avoid Before Your SkinPen Microneedling Treatment

Exfoliating Products

One day before your treatment, it is crucial to stop using any exfoliating products or skincare items. Exfoliating ingredients include retinoic acid, retinol, tretinoin, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic, and glycolic acids.

Accutane is a medication for the skin. The active ingredient isotretinoin is a retinoid. This product should not be taken for six months before your microneedling treatment. It is essential to consult with a physician before you stop taking the medication.

Blood Thinners

Before your SkinPen microneedling treatment, avoid NSAIDS for the week beforehand. If you need to take any remedies for pain, soreness, or headaches you experience beforehand, take acetaminophen.

Other blood thinning supplements should be avoided as well. These include vitamin E, fish oil, turmeric, and ginger.

Hair Removal

Shaving the week before your microneedling treatment is fine, but on the day of the treatment, you should not shave. This is because it can cause skin irritation. If you shave the day before, make sure the blade is sharp, you use shaving cream, and apply lotion to moisturize the skin afterward.

All other hair removal methods should be avoided. These include waxing, laser treatments, hair removal creams, threading, and electrolysis. These methods can increase skin sensitivity during and after your treatment. These methods should be avoided for a week before and after the treatment.

Heat-Based Treatments

Avoiding heat-based treatments before your microneedling session, including IPL and laser therapy, is essential. These can cause skin sensitivity, impacting your healing and discomfort during your SkinPen microneedling session. Chemical peels should also be avoided because they increase sensitivity.  This can minimize SkinPen recovery time.

UV Damage

Avoiding UV damage before your session is essential. Individuals can do so by wearing SPF, staying shaded, wearing skin-covering clothing, and avoiding tanning beds.

How to Prepare for Your Treatment

If you have a history of herpes outbreaks or cold sores, using an antiviral medication beforehand can prevent the outbreak for individuals prone to them or with sensitive skin. Call our offices if you have this issue, and we can call a prescription for you.

On your treatment day, it is crucial to come with your skin makeup and product-free. Makeup, skin lotion, and sunscreen should all be avoided. Gently cleansing the targeted area is fine and will not irritate the treatment area.
