What is Kybella?

Are you bothered by extra fullness beneath your chin, also sometimes called a “double chin”? If so, you are not alone. Kybella is an injectable treatment that can actually break down fat cells under the chin for a slimmer profile! It is made up of synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps to break down dietary fat.

The Kybella Treatment

During your Kybella treatment, injection sites will be marked with a marker, and multiple small injections will be administered under the chin, which usually takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. Some patients describe a feeling of warmth during injections. The exact number of injections will be dependent on the amount of change you would like to see.

Each Kybella treatment will be given at least one month apart, and patients should not undergo more than six treatments. Dr. Erwin can help to create a personalized treatment plan with you during your consultation appointment.

Kybella Treatment Recovery

Following Kybella injections, swelling, bruising, and numbness in the treatment area may occur. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication can be used to help eliminate any discomfort following treatment. There is typically no downtime required, so patients can return to their normal daily activities as soon as they feel comfortable. Visible results are often seen after 2-4 treatments. Because Kybella injections destroy fat cells, the fat under the chin should not return.

Be sure to let Dr. Erwin know if you experience facial muscle weakness, an uneven smile, trouble swallowing, or nerve injury to the jaw. While these side effects are rare, they can be severe.

Does Kybella tighten skin?

Kybella is a fat-destroying compound, not a skin-tightening one. For that reason, not everyone is ideal for this treatment for reducing the appearance of a double chin.

Are Kybella injections painful?

No, when administered by a trained medical professional, Kybella injections are routine and painless.

Does Kybella work for belly fat?

Kybella is only FDA-approved for injection under the chin, not for fat reduction elsewhere on the body.

Can fat come back after Kybella?

Kybella destroys fat cells rather than shrink them, meaning that any fat you gain after the treatment will not go directly to the chin, but rather be distributed throughout the body proportionally.

Can I lay down after Kybella?

Yes, youre allowed to sleep as normal following Kybella treatments, although you should avoid putting a lot of pressure in the area under your chin, meaning you shouldnt sleep on your stomach for a few days.

Is one Kybella treatment enough?

At our office, we recommend between 2 and 3 treatments for maximum results.

Can Kybella get rid of jowls?

It depends. If the jowls are caused by excess fat, yes, Kybella can get rid of jowls. But if the jowls are caused by excess, sagging skin, Kybella isn’t the right treatment for you.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella uses a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid which naturally helps absorb fat. When it’s injected, the acid destroys the fat cells under the chin to help reduce a double chin.
