What are Botox and Dysport?
Both Botox and Dysport are injectable treatments made of botulinum toxin type A. Also known as, neurotoxin treatments, Botox and Dysport are both used to smooth dynamic wrinkles or wrinkles that form as a result of repeated facial movements over time. They work by blocking nerve signals to the muscles, causing them to relax for smoother skin. The main difference between Botox and Dysport is the formulation, which influences the dosage used, how much the product will spread under the skin, and how quickly results are seen.
Botox and Dysport are most commonly used to treat the following areas:
- Forehead creases.
- Glabellar lines (11s).
- Crow’s feet.
- Corners of the mouth.
- The chin.
- Neck bands.

The Botox and Dysport Treatment
During Botox or Dysport treatment, a topical numbing cream can be applied to the targeted areas to ensure that you are comfortable during treatment. However, many people do not even need the numbing cream as the treatment is not too uncomfortable. Then, a small syringe will be used to inject the neurotoxin of your choice into the skin. Many patients describe a small pinch during injection, though it should not be painful. The number of injections will depend on the amount of change desired and Dr. Erwin’s recommendation. Treatment usually takes 15-20 minutes to complete.
There is no downtime required following Botox or Dysport injections. However, you will be asked to avoid exercise or strenuous activities for 24 hours afterward. You should also avoid massaging or touching the treatment area afterward, as this can cause the product to spread to other areas. Mild swelling, redness, or bruising may occur, which will dissipate with time. Final results can be seen in 3 – 7 days following injections and should last for 3 – 4 months. To maintain results, you will need to repeat the treatment once your lines begin to show again.
Who is a Good Candidate for Botox and Dysport?
Adults who are unhappy with the appearance of dynamic lines and wrinkles can often benefit from Botox or Dysport injections. Those in good health with a positive attitude are often happiest with their results. Botox and Dysport can also be combined with other cosmetic treatments such as chemical peels, dermal fillers, and more to further improve results. The best way to determine if this treatment is a good fit for you is to schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Erwin. During this meeting, you can discuss your aesthetic goals with her, as well as ask any questions that you may have.
