What is Dermaplaning?

Are you looking for a quick and easy way to achieve a smooth, radiant complexion? If so, dermaplaning is the treatment for you! Dermaplaning, also called microplanning, is a skin treatment that is done using an exfoliating blade to slough away dead skin cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the face. The main goal of this treatment is to create a smooth, radiant complexion.

Dermaplaning can be used to treat any skin type, and can improve:

  • Dull skin.
  • Dry skin.
  • Fine wrinkles.
  • Sun-damaged skin.
  • Acne scars.

There are also many pros to the dermaplaning treatment, including:

  • Painless exfoliation that stimulates cellular turnover.
  • No downtime
  • Is great for clients with sensitive skin and those who are pregnant.
  • Treatment can be performed frequently.
  • Helps makeup to go on more evenly and smoothly.
  • Can lighten scars from past acne.

While there are some dermaplaning tools that can be purchased so that you can perform this procedure at home, we do not recommend this. By giving yourself dermaplaning you increase the risk of infection, complications, and experiencing pain and comfort. If you are interested in learning more about dermaplaning and if you are a candidate, contact our office today to schedule a consultation appointment with our skilled dermatologist, Dr. Erwin.

Dermaplaning Treatment

Over time, your skin is exposed to irritants, environmental toxins, and sun damage. This can cause your skin to appear dull, or can even make you look aged. Dermaplaning sloughs away those damaged skin cells for a more radiant appearance!

Prior to a dermaplaning treatment, you should avoid direct contact with the sun for a week to ensure that you do not develop a sunburn. If you have an active acne-flare up, you will need to reschedule your appointment to avoid spreading bacteria on the face.

During the dermaplaning treatment, your skin will be gently pulled tightly and a special sterile blade will be turned to a 45-degree angle and dragged slowly and carefully across the skin, removing dead skin cells and peach fuzz. This procedure is completely painless, though a tingling sensation may be felt. Treatment usually takes about 20-30 minutes to complete.

Dermaplaning FAQs

How often should you Dermaplane?

Most patients benefit from monthly dermaplaning treatments. Dr. Erwin can determine the right treatment package for you based on your goals.

How long do dermaplaning results last?

Dermaplaning can produce results for two to three weeks after treatment. Patients often enjoy a more radiant, smooth look to the skin during this time.

Who’s not a good candidate for dermaplaning?

Patients who have active acne or certain active skincare conditions may not be good candidates for dermaplaning. Additionally, if you have coarse facial hair, you may need to explore other options.

Is dermaplaning just shaving?

Dermaplaning is actually a manual exfoliation technique, meaning it also removes dead skin cells and debris from the surface of the skin. While it removes fine, \u201cpeach fuzz\u201d hairs, it should not be considered the same as shaving.

Can I put makeup on after dermaplaning?

Yes, there is no downtime associated with dermaplaning, so you can resume your normal skincare and makeup routine immediately after.

What are the benefits of Dermaplaning?

It reveals brighter, newer skin underneath the dead skin and removes any unwanted hair you have as well.

Dermaplaning Recovery

There is no downtime following dermaplaning, and patients can return to their normal activities right away. Slight facial redness may occur, though this will dissipate over time. Patients will experience brighter, smoother skin directly after treatment, which will improve over the next couple of days. It is important to be careful about sun exposure, as your skin may be sensitive for a while after treatment.
