What is Sclerotherapy?

Are you unhappy with the appearance of enlarged or dilated veins on your legs that cause self-consciousness? Perhaps you feel uncomfortable wearing shorts or skirts that show off your legs. If so, you may be able to benefit from sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a treatment used to eliminate visible spider veins. This treatment involves the injection of a special solution directly into the vein. This causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to redirect to healthier veins. The treated vein will then collapse and be absorbed into local tissue. This treatment is popular for many because it is quick and easy with no downtime required.

The Sclerotherapy Treatment

Before sclerotherapy, patients should avoid certain medications. Dr. Erwin will inform you about these medications during your consultation. Lotion should also not be applied to the legs before the procedure.

During treatment, your legs will be cleansed, and a salt solution is injected through a small syringe directly into the vein. The solution works by irritating the lining of the vein, causing it to swell shut and blow the blood flow. Eventually, the vein will become scar tissue and disappear. During the injection, mild discomfort and cramping may occur. The number of veins injected during one session will depend on the location and size of the veins. One session usually takes 15-30 minutes to complete.
