Sclerotherapy

This treatment is still considered to be the gold-standard for treatment of spider telangiectasias (veins) on the legs. It involves injecting concentrated saline solution into the veins, which irritates the lining of the blood vessels targeted and causes them to collapse and dissolve. The procedure involves slight stinging and burning with the injections. Most patients have red spots and slight bruising after the procedure, which may last for days or weeks. This procedure is best done in the spring, fall or winter. The majority of patients require 2-4 treatments.

Laser vein treatments are useful when sclerotherapy is not effective, or when the veins are very small. It is also an excellent option when a patient is afraid of injections with needles.
