Fillers

Fillers – Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm XC, Juvederm Voluma XC, Radiesse, Belotero

Fillers are injected into facial tissue to smooth wrinkles and folds, especially around the nose and mouth. They are FDA approved to improve the nasolabial folds (area from the nose to the corner of the mouth). They can also be used to augment the cheek bones, temples, corners of the mouth and other areas, but are not FDA approved for these uses. Restylane is FDA approved for lip augmentation.

Which filler is right for you? Each filler has slightly different properties and advantages. Restylane, Perlane, and Juvederm and Belotero are all hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body. The role of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding in water and to act as a cushioning agent. The substance usually lasts 9 months to one year. Radiesse is a calcium-based microspheres and gel that immediately correct volume loss. Radiesse lasts a year or more. These fillers also stimulate growth of your own collagen over time.

Juvederm Voluma, XC is an injectable gel indicated for deep (subcutaneous and/or supraperiosteal) injection for cheek augmentation to correct age-related volume deficit in the mid-face in adults over the age of 21.  Voluma lasts up to two years.

Possible side effects: Serious problems are rare. Less severe side effects that may occur include: headache, respiratory infection, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Slight bruising may occur at the injection sites. If you take aspirin, vitamin E, ginko, garlic, ginsing, or NSAIDS (e.g. ibuprofen) it is recommended that you stop these supplements (with approval of prescribing physician) 14 days prior to the treatment to decrease bruising after the procedure.
